No, Canine wellness DNA testing is for veterinary use only and pet owners can only purchase the test from a veterinarian.
Canine wellness DNA testing does not report breed.
Canine wellness DNA testing focuses specifically on genetic traits that are common in veterinary practice and actionable – either preventable or easier to treat by knowing there is increased risk in advance. Many tests offered online directly to pet parents are used to determine the breed ancestry of a mixed breed dog or screen for a number of genetic recessive traits associated with health and trait markers. This information is especially useful for breeders prior to a mating, but may be less applicable and actionable for the general pet parent.
Generally, test results are available two to three weeks after samples are received at the lab. Once testing is complete, results are sent to the veterinary hospital that ordered the test and are available to be shared via email or printed copy to the pet parent at the next exam visit.
Only cytology brushes supplied with Igenity Canine Wellness kit boxes are accepted for this test. Samples must be returned to the lab in the original kit box.
Conditions chosen for Canine wellness DNA testing were carefully selected because of their relevance to veterinary medicine and the ability to take action based on the results for a large variety of breeds. Additional in-depth breed specific testing might be indicated for animals that are being considered for breeding purposes.
Canine wellness DNA testing can be administered at any age!
